The Most Expensive Sporting Events
With the World Cup in Russia just around the corner, it’s safe to say that all four corners of the globe will be tuned in. The football spectacle is the most widely viewed sporting event on the planet, but surprisingly, it isn’t the most expensive in terms of ticket prices.
This infographic details how the previous World Cup in Brazil was indeed the most expensive soccer match in history in terms of tickets ($20,000), but it didn’t even make the top 10 in terms of all sporting events, coming in at 12th position.
Coming in at number 1 was the MLB World Series match between Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians, with one ticket fetching a staggering $1.17 million to be in the heart of the action. The second most expensive ticket was to see the Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao fight, which cost $141,000 for a ringside seat, and ended up grossing $600 million in total.
Next on the list was game 5 of the 2017 NBA Finals between Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors, when tickets were sold for up to $133,000. The 2017 crossover fight between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor was billed as the “Money Fight”, and it was no wonder as ringside seats went for around $128,705 each. In 2013, Andy Murray squared up against Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final, and it the most expensive game in tennis history. Tickets were sold for $119,045, which included a booking fee of $15,000!
